Residential Septic Pumping Service

Easy Things You Can Do to Maintain Your Septic System and Avoid Costly Repairs

To maintain your septic system:

DO: Have the system inspected and pumped every three to five years.

DO: Know the location of the septic system and drain field.

DO: Keep a record of all inspections, pumpings, repairs, and contract or engineering work.

DO: Grow grass or small plants (not trees or shrubs) above the septic system to hold the drain field in place.

DO: Install water-conserving devices in faucets, showerheads, and toilets to reduce water volume.

DO: Repair dripping faucets and leaking toilets.

DO: Run washing machines and dishwashers only when full, and avoid long showers.

DO: Divert roof drains and surface water from driveways and hillsides away from the septic system.

DO: Keep sump pumps and house footing drains away from the system.

To avoid costly septic system repairs:

DON’T: Dump nonbiodegradable material, strong chemicals, or grease into your sink or toilet.

DON’T: Use a garbage grinder or disposal if it feeds into the septic tank.

DON’T: Plant trees within 30 feet of your system or park/drive over any part of the system.

DON’T: Run excessive loads of laundry in your washing machine.

DON’T: Use chemical solvents to clean the plumbing or septic system — they can contaminate your groundwater.
